Disordered in pylons installations in Mbankolo: illegal operators called to order

The Mbankolo neighbourhood with is high mountains in considered one of the highest points in Yaoundé and ideal to host the pylons of the CRTV and other companies that use radio signal in the nation’s capital.

Since the liberalisation of Communication in Cameroon, several companies have installed pylons around Mbankolo, sometimes in abject violation of the regulations enforce. The anarchical installations have resulted in interferences and sometimes distortion of signals radio and television signals from the Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV.

In a bid to restore order in the sector, The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng in her capacity as Chair of the Inter-ministerial Committee for the Allocation of Frequency Bandwidths, issued a statement on Monday 11th December 2017.

She gave three months to illegal operators on the Mount Mbankolo site to comply with the regulations enforce in compliance with the standards for radio installations. This three months deadline does not however exclude penalties provided for in the 2010 Electronic Communications Act against fraudster.

The Director of Broadcasting and TV Transmissions at the CRTV, Moussa Samali, described the phenomenon is disturbing to views of the national television. “This is a worrying situation, because if nothing is done the disruptions that have occurred in the past can still resurface.” He lamented.

The CRTV has however taken the matter to competent institutions. The Central Director of the Technologies and Solutions at the CRTV, Chia Theophilus Salifu insists that “CRTV has contacted the competent authorities” to seek lasting solutions to the perennial problem of jamming of waves orchestrated by private mobile phones and media operators who for the most part exploit the station illegally.

The allocation of frequency bandwidths to different radio communication services requires a license to operate electronic communication networks issued by Ministry of Post and telecommunications and the equipment must be approved and installed by operators accredited by the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency.

Despite the regulations, 41 radio operators providing broadcast and television services have been operation on the site since 2016 with only a few respecting the regulations.
