South Africa: Jacob Zuma Steps Down

75-year-old Jacob Zuma has resigned as South Africa’s president.

He announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation this Wednesday, 14th February 2018.

His resignation comes after 9 years of leadership, corruption scandals and fruitless attempts to force him to step down.

Jacob Zuma’s ANC party had earlier on forced him to resign or face a vote of no confidence.

In the televised speech, Mr Zuma stated that the growing violence and disagreements within the party partially account for his resignation.
” No life should be lost in my name, and the ANC should never be divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as the president of the Republic of South Africa with immediate effect” – Jacob Zuma

The Deputy President and ANC leader Cyril Ramaphoda is next in line for the presidential job.
