33rd Women’s Day: A day of reflection in Cameroon

On 8th March 2018, Cameroon will join the international community to commemorate the 33rd International Women’s Day on the theme “Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists transforming women’s lives”.

Cameroon has domesticated reflections and adopted “Intensify the fight against discrimination on women: Strengthen partnership to speed up sustainable development”as national theme.

The reflections have been chosen in line with the important contribution of women in sustainable development.

The celebration is an opportunity to address the various forms of discrimination suffered by women and Government’s policy action in favour of equality.

According to the Brundtland Commission’s Paper,’ Our Common Future’ sustainable development could be defined as, “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

How are women involved in sustainable development?

According to UN Women, “gender equality is a right and fulfilling this right is the best chance we have in meeting some of the most pressing challenges of our time.”

UN Women posits that the challenges ‘of our time’ affect more women than men and insist that women are well-placed to provide solutions to these challenges.

With this argument, it therefore becomes evident that discrimination against women causes delays in sustainable development.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015 emphasise on the importance of raising women to be full agents of development.

Cameroon’s theme for the International Women’s Day is therefore an invitation to all stakeholders to contribute to the policy of equality.

The Minister of Women Empowerment and the Family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoa echoed this on 30th January 2018 when she officially launched commemorative activities ahead of Women’s Day.

The Minister called on men to join women celebrate the day just like they are doing in the “He for She” Campaign.
