In two days, women in Cameroon and the international community will celebrate the International Women’s Day.
Through out the activities leading to the celebration, equality, leadership and Women’s empowerment have been recurrent taking points during debates and conferences.
The government of Cameroon has, in recent years, proven beyond reasonable doubt that women are, as important as men.
Another ocular proof is the appointment of a woman in the all important Ministry of Secondary Education.
In all, eleven women sit in President Paul Biya’s present government.
A look at the individual profile of these ladies gives reason to think Women’s Empowerment in Cameroon is not just a slogan.
1) Pauline Nalova Lyonga Egbe
She is the new Minister of Secondary Education appointed by Presidential decree on Friday 2nd March 2018. Before her appointment, she was Board Chair of the Douala General hospital.She previously served as the vice rector in charge of teaching and professionalism, and later Rector of the University of Buea.She holds a PHD from the University of Anne Arbor in Michigan in the United States of America.
2) Minette Libom Li Likeng
The 59- year -old was appointed Minister of Post and Telecommunications
on 2nd October 2015. Before her appointment, she was the Director General of Customs.She obtained a first degree in Economic Science, politics and political analysis in 1982. She is a graduate of the School of Administration and Magistracy , ENAM.
3) Mbah Acha Rose
She was appointed Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of the Supreme State Audit on 2nd October 2015. She studied at the University of Yaounde 1 and later the Advanced School of Administration and Magistracy, ENAM.She was upgraded to a senior Magistrate in 2014 . She had previously served as the President of the Administrative Court in Bamenda , North West Region and Vice President of South West Court of Appeal.
4) Marie Therese Abena Ondoa
she was appointed Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family in 2009.Before then, she was Director of the Yaoundé Central hospital.The one time professor and vice Dean in Charge of Research and Corporation at the University of Yaoundé 1 is a pediatrician.
5) Pauline Irene Nguene
She became the Minister of Social Affairs in October 2015. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Yaoundé 1. She is a trained petrochemical engineer .The social Affairs boss studied in the United States of America and Canada.
Before her appointment , she was also named the president of the Support council for the realization of Contracts and Partnerships.
6) Jacqueline Joung a Bessike
She has been working as the Minister of Surveys and Land Tenure since 11th November 2011. The economist specialised in Banking and Finance was appointed first female Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism in 1995, and later Secretary General at the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training.
7) Madeleine Tchuinte
Mme Tchuinte was appointed Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation on 8th December 2004.
The holder of a Diploma in Pharmacology from the University of Strasbourg ran a pharmacy in Bafoussam before she was brought into government .
8) Yousouf Adidja Alim
She has been the Minister of Basic Education since 30th June 2009.
She is a graduate of the Advance School of Administration and Magistracy with specialty in Social Affairs.
Yousouf Adidja Alim is former Director of Women’s Empowerment Centre in Garoua.
9) Clementine Ananga Messina
She was appointed Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in June 2009.
The engineer had worked in the Ministry for 23years before her appointment.She is a holder of a Diploma of Economic Management.
10) Marie Rose Dibong nee Biyong
She has been serving as the Secretary State at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development since 2013. Before her appointment, she was the Deputy Director General of Credit Foncier du Cameroon.
11) Koulsoumi Alhaji Boukar
She has the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife since 9th December 2011. Before the appointment, she was charger de mission in charge of Economic Affairs at the Presidency of the republic. She is a graduate of the National School of Administration and Magistracy, ENAM.
