2018 GCE: Candidates begin writing

Students in Cameroon have begun the written part of the General Certificate of Education, GCE examination this 28th May 2018.

The exam to run till 15th June 2018 is very determinant for Form Five and Upper Sixth students of the anglophone subsystem of education.

Successful candidates for the GCE Ordinary Level Exam gain easy access to the high school (Lower Sixth) meanwhile those who succeed in the GCE Advanced Level Exam are admitted into the University.

Both “O” and “A” Level candidates began with Economics.

In one of the centres in Yaounde, students could be seen rushing into the examination halls as early as 7am.

By 7:45am, most were already seated, waiting to begin writing Economics Paper 1.

At exactly 8am, a bell was rung to signal the beginning of the examination.

While the students silently filled their scripts, invigilators diligently watched to ensure there is no examination malpractice.

A few hours later, some students who had finished writing left the hall while others waited for the official end of the session.

During the period of break, candidates discussed and expressed divergent views about the first paper.

Break time is supposed to be time for recreation but some candidates preferred to hang around the corridors for last-minute revision ahead of the afternoon paper.

The 2018 GCE Examination comes within a context of socio-political unrest especially in the two english-speaking regions were most of the candidates are registered.

The Secondary Education Ministry has taken a number of measures to avoid a re-play of the record low performance registered in the 2017 session.
