2018 World Cup: Senegal gives Africa a first victory as round one ends

The Teranga Lions of Senegal has given Africa its first victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In a first outing, the West African nation trashed the heavy weight Poland 2-1.

Senegal opened the score board in the 38th minute via an own goal by Thiago Cionek, who deflected Idris Gaye’s shot into the net.

Poland midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak scored a goal, it was a costly error.

At the end of the first half, Senegal was ahead with the own goal by Thiago Cionek.

At resumption,  Krychowiak played a high, aimless backpass that Senegalese, striker M’Baye Niang captured and controlled before tapping into an empty net.

Senegal’s lead was up by two goals at the 60th minute.

However, the Poles pulled a goal back four minutes to full time.  Grzegorz Krychowiak headed home from a free kick at the 86th minute to make it 2-1.

Poland, the highest-ranked side in Group H and number eight in the world, struggled to create further chances with a free-kick from captain Robert Lewandowski to no avail.

The Aliu Cisse-led team gets three points.

The team will be paired with Group H leader Japan that earlier earned a 2-1 victory over Colombia.

Senegal icon, El Hadji Diouf hailed his country’s World Cup victory over Poland as a “perfect start”, but warned that toughest tests are still to come.

Diouf, became a household name in football especially after the 2002 tournament.

He was present in Moscow to watch Aliou Cisse’s men seize the 2-1victory.

Senegal is scheduled to face Japan and Colombia in the next two Group H matches.

The Terenga Lions of Senegal will seal a place a the 16th final if they beat Akira Nishino’s men on Sunday 24 June 2018.

Senegal is making its second World Cup appearance.

Egypt on her part hjave lost two of her games same as Morocco
