North Region: A case of cholera detected; officials on the offensive

Health officials in the North Region have announced one suspected case of cholera in Garoua, North Region. The case was reported in the Takasko neighbourhood, Garoua II subdivision.

Health officials say there is no confirmation until lab results that have been carried out to ascertain that it is the infection.

In the meantime the population of Garoua has been called upon to remain calm, stay vigilant and carryout good hygienic practices.

The fear of an epidermis heightens because three suspected cases were earlier registered between 18th and 21st May 2018 in the Mayo Oulo Subdivision Mayo, Louti Division health zones that borders Nigeria.

The three cases reportedly consumed food items from the Nigerian side of the border and began experiencing the symptoms.

Samples of stool were collected from all three women aged between 26-30 and sent to the Centre Pasteur du Cameroun Garoua centre (CPC).

On 23 May, the Centre Pasteur Garoua released the laboratory results of the two samples from the Guirviza health area;  one of the two tested positive for vibrio cholera and the other was negative.

The last cholera outbreak was reported in 2014 with more than one thousand five hundred (1500) cases reported.

 

Public health response to the threat

 

Since 24th May 2018, cholera kits have been distributed to potential treatment centres.

The World Health Organisation, WHO and partners have carried of chlorination of water sites and supplies.

Health care facilities systematically isolate suspected cases during the period of treatment.

 

Communication and social mobilization

Community health workers (CHWs) in villages and neighbourhoods are educating the public on the DOs and DON’Ts.

The public health awareness teachings are carried out with the support of Mayo Oulo municipal authorities.

The Governor of the North Region has mobilised all competent authorities in anticipation of an epidermis.

The cholera contingency plan, put in place during previous outbreaks has been activated.

Cholera is an acute enteric infection caused by the ingestion of _Vibrio cholerae_bacteria present in faecal contaminated water or food.

It is primarily linked to insufficient access to safe water and adequate sanitation. Cholera is a potentially infectious disease and can cause high morbidity and mortality.

It has the potential of spreading rapidly depending on level of exposure and the context.
