Following the prison break in Ndop, Ngoketunjia Division, North West region, government says adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the security of the population.
The Senior Divisional Officer of Ngoketunjia, Bernard William Binda recounts that a group of unknown armed men stormed the Ndop principal prison and set the main block on fire on 28th July 2018.
The unknown gang fired shots and broke into the prison setting more than one hundred sixty inmates free.
Prison assets were also lost and part of the structure completely ruined.
Some prison files that were kept at the facility were burnt to ashes in the process.
The prison guards on duty during the attack were overpowered as the prison was set on fire.
The SDO of Ngoketunjia says government has mobilised troops and a man hunt has been organised to get the prison escapees.
The remaining inmates have been transferred to the Bamenda Central Prison.
Other measures have been put in place to identify the perpetrators of the attack.
Control points in and around Ndop have multiplied with stringent search carried out to identify the wanted.
It is the first time the Ndop Principal Prison has been attacked since the beginning of the socio- political crises in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.
