Cameroon’s professional, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is at the verge of signing a three year contract with French club, Paris Saint Germain, PSG.
Choupo-Moting, 29, is undergoing the reguired medical tests this Friday 31st August 2018 in Paris, according PSG manager Thomas Tuchel.
The former Stoke City forward became a free agent at the end of last season when the Premier League side was relegated to the EFL Championship.
The contract with the Ligue 1 top flight is expected to materialise before the transfer window closes on Friday night 31st August 2018.
The French outfit is signing the former Schalke 04 player as a substitute to Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, according to Mr Tuchel.
PSG’s decision to intergrate the forward has baffled some football fans who believe that Choupo-Moting is seemingly not the player the club needs now.
But Thomas Tuchel defends his choice at a press conference in the French capital city. The German-born coach argues that the one-time Hamburger SV forward can manage the ball well in the air, just like Cavani.
Choupo-Moting is 1.91m (6 ft 3 in) tall.
“We have been looking for a player who can supplement Cavani for many days now. We have the opportunity to sign Maxim,” Tuchel said.
“Because we were looking for a player who is strong in the air, capable of controlling the ball in the air and tough in air duels, for that is the strength of Edi [Cavani], too”, he continued
“It is not easy to be a substitute to Edinson Cavani,” Tuchel added.
The coach also stated that Choupo-Moting is willing to play as a substitute.
“For Maxim, it’s like that. He has a good character. He is a high-level player. He is used to coming off the bench [play as substitute]. He is always positive.
“For a long time now, we have been looking for a player with such characteristics,” Mr Tuchel revealed.
PSG is also finalising a deal with Juan Bernat, 25, from Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich.
Choupo-Moting reunites with Tuchel after their first meeting earlier at Mainz 05 (in the Bundesliga) where he scored 20 goals in 74 appearances between 2011 and 2014.
He has managed 13 goals in 45 caps for Cameroon since making his debut with the Indomitable Lions in 2010.
Choupo-Moting also features on the 23-man squad called up by Clarence Seedorf for the friendly against the Comoros Island on September 8th 2018.
