2018 Presidential Election: Constitutional Council Adjourns sessions

The Constitutional Council will continue hearings on Wednesday 17th October 2018 at 9:30 am. The decision was taken by the president of the council during hearings on the petition from Maurice Kamto for the annulations of elections in seven regions for irregularities.

The hearings were suspended and adjourned after long hours of debates by the college of lawyers of Maurice Kamto’s defence council.

The constitutional council had earlier in the day dismissed all 14 petitions filed by Bertin Kisob, of the Cameroon Party for Social Justice, a detainee at Kondegui Central Prison who was exceptionally authorised to defend his case before the council.

The petition by Gabanmidanha Rigobert Aminou was also deem inadmissible. Both candidates whose files to run for the Presidential election were rejected by the Electoral Board of Elecam did not have the quality to petition the constitutional council because they did not run for the elections. However, the council gave them the opportunity to defend their petitions before dismissing them.

Maurice Kamto’s petition indicting five (5) members of the Constitutional Council for holding other positions that were incompatible with the function of member of the council thereby raise doubts of their impartially was also dismissed.

The case was deem inadmissible because only the President of the Republic of two third (2/3) of the Constitutional Council and judge its partiality as stipulated by the law creating the structure.

The verdict was pronounced after long hours of deliberations by the college of defence lawyers amongst who was Barrister Akere Muna, candidate for the presidential elections who withdrew at the last minute to support Maurice Kamto.

The MRC presidential hopeful, also took active part in the deliberations bring up various arguments to defend his case.

The council also dismissed the petition for the cancellation of elections filed by Cabral Libii for the cancellation of the elections because of irregularities. The presidential candidate of Universe party was not present at the hearings. He was represented by his lawyers.

Hearings are expected to continue Wednesday with the petitions of Maurice Kamto for election irregularities. The SDF’s candidate Joshua Osih who followed the deliberations will also be expected to defend his petition before the Council on Wednesday.
