Eseka train accident: Victims begin receiving special Relief package

Families of victims of the Eseka train accident have begun receiving the one billion special relief package offered by president Paul Biya.

The Secretary General at the Prime Minister’s office, Prof Seraphin Magloire Fouda presided over the ceremony to hand over the cheques to the first set of victims on Wednesday, 02nd October 2018 in Yaoundé.

Three other ministries were present during this first phase of the exercise. The Minister of Transport , Jean Ernest Ngale Masina Bibehe, representatives from the Ministry of health and the Ministry of Finance.

Cheques worth 215 million FCFA were given out to sixty-four victims of the accident; 60 cases of death and four cases declared missing.

The payment will be done at all branches of Afriland First Bank the nationwide henceforth.

The distribution of the special relief package comes months after preliminary findings carried out by the adhoc committee. The committee placed under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Philemon Yang, was charged with identifying and classifying the victims. The committee was also expected to come up with parameters for the distribution of the special relief package.

Measures taken after the accident 

The inter-ministerial committee was set up by the Head of State after the accident that left over 80 people dead, dozens wounded and others missing.
The committee’s preliminary findings revealed that Camrail was responsible for the accident.Two years after the accident, Camrail has been indicted by the Eseka court of first instance for solely being responsible for the accident. The decision was announced on 27th September in Eseka.
