Disposing garbage is a new activity for some young volunteers at the Mimboman fruit market, since Hysacam stopped collecting garbage in some neighborhoods in Yaounde.
The fruit market that produces huge amounts of fruit garbage daily, was becoming a health hazard as the waste kept piling up.
The variety of fruits; pineapples, watermelon, oranges, papayas, grapes and bananas some of which are peeled and sliced, attracts flies as the garbage accumulates.
The fruit vendors innitially relied on the garbage disposal company, Hysacam for daily disposal.
The company gradually became irregular due to managerial issues, prompting the young volunteers to take over.
Diposing garbage: Voluteers routine
At day break, the young boys come around and offer to transport the piles of garbage at a bargained financial reward.
The garbage is packed and transported in bags, buckets or trucks to Hysacam bins at major junctions. Hysacam later pickes up the garbage from the main junctions to its treatment Centre at Nkoulfoulou.
Vendors say working with these volunteers has been the most efficient garbage disposal method since Hysacam became irregular.
