The DRC: Felix Tshisekedi sworn in as 4th Independence President

Félix Tshisekedi is officially the 4th President of a post independent Democratic Republic of Congo.

The solemn ceremony took place earlier Thursday 24th January 2019 at the Palais de la Nation in Kinshasa. (presidential palace).

In his inaugural address, H.E. Félix Tshisekedi paid hommage to the former presidents of the DRC and paid a special tribute to his predecessor who many decribe as the father of democracy of the DRC.

The new President promised to right the wrongs of the past and uphold equal opportunities for all.

The ceremony was witnessed by leaders of Kenya and Zambia.

Tanzania was represented by its Vice President while China, France, Japan and the United States were represented by their ambassadors.

After the oath of office, the 55-year-old received the national flag and a copy of the constitution from outgoing President Joseph Kabila who ends eighteen years as President.

President Tshisekedi is now expected
to appoint a Prime Minister.

Many predict he will appoint pro-Kabila officials into key positions in government given the fact that they have an overwhelming majority in Parliament.

Tshisekedi was declared winner with 38.5% over his rival Martin Fayulu, who was credited with 34.8%.
