Basketball: Cameroon’s international Joel Embiid receives national reverence

The government of Cameroon has saluted the outstanding performances of Joel Embiid.

The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi sent a letter of congratulation to the international basketball player.

In the letter of appreciation, the sports boss highlighted Joel Embiid basketball prowess that has pushed him to tenth best in the world.

Joel Embiid is in the Philadephia Sixers, USA and has featured on the top ten best for a second consecutive ranking in the National Basketball Association (NBA.

The 28 year old, stands tall with two successive participations in the All-Star Games,  the competition reserved only for the best.

Describing him as Cameroonian sports ambassador, Mr. Mouelle Kombi exhorted Cameroonians to continue to pray for his success.

Basketball: Joel Embiid’s genesis

Joel Hans Embiid is a Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) born on 16th March 1994 in Yaounde to a military officer, Thomas Embiid and Christine.

His passion for basketball started at 16 when he moved to the United States .

Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy for a year and later, to “The Rock School” in Gainesville, Florida where he led the school team to a 33-4 record and state championship.

Professional Career

In April 2014, Embiid declared for the 2014 NBA draft, forgoing his final three years in school.

After a series of injuries he was selected with the third overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers.

He was third Cameroonian NBA  player after Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Luc Mbah a Moute.

Embiid has been setting a new career record in every game he played.

 Embiid’s performance as a student

He attended the University of Kansas in the USA for one year.

On 13th February 2014, he was named one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year.

From 2013–14, he played 28 games, averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes per game.

He earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named second-team All-Big 12.
