Inhabitants of Douala were awaken by cracking sound and choking smoke from wild flames the ravaged the Congo market in Douala on the night of Saturday breaking Sunday 23 – 24 February 2019.
Traders rescued little or nothing from their shops that had been reduced to ashes.
The Governor of the Littoral region, Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua was on the scene and witnessed fire fighters battling with the flames.
By day break, the Governor was on site for an evaluation of the situation.
The Governor decried the fact that some shops were haphazardly constructed and impeded the free movement of fire fighting vehicles slowing down
the rescue exercise.
Financial and material damage has been estimated at hundreds of millions of CFA Francs.
An administrative and judicial investigation has been opened following the incident.
