2019 AFCON: Profiling the Coelacanths of the Comoros

Cameroon’s participation at the biggest African Football event to be organised in Egypt will depend on the outcome of the match against the Comoro Island.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will need atleast a draw to get a qualification ticket.

Their Saturday opponent, the Coelacanths of the Comoro Island is not a reputed heavyweight in African football.

However, last encounter with the Indomitable Lions in  Moroni was a tie-breaker. The Comoro Island held Cameroon to a draw at home in an away leg of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.

Comoros National Football team

The little known football nation joined the Confederatiom of African Football, CAF, in 2003 , and became  FIFA member in 2005
Comoros played its first matches during the 1979 Indian Ocean Island Games.

The team got qualification for the 2009 Arab Nations Cup in 2006.

In 2007, Comoros first attempted qualification for the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations 2010 but lost in the preliminary round 2-10 aggregate to Madagascar.

The team is registered with  few tournaments including the Indian Ocean Island Games, the COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup and the Arab Nations Cup.

Comoros has not appeared in an AFCON competition since 1976.

They attempted AFCON qualification in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017 but did not succeed.

In their last 10 encounters, the Comorian National football selection have won two games, drawn five and recorded three defeats.

Head-to Head records against other countries

The Comoro Island has played a total of forty-nine games ever with eighteen countries recording eight just wins, nine draws, and thirty-two losses.

In all, Cameroon’s rival has scored thirty-two goals in their football run while conceeding one hundred and nine.

Cameroon and the Comoros do not have a long football history. Both teams have faced-off just once in a match that ended 1-1.

The highest number of matches played  by the Comoros is against Madagascar and the Maritius; both countries have faced the Comoros six times each.

2019 AFCON Qualifiers

The country is paired alongside Cameroon and Malawi in Group B of the ongoing 2019 AFCON qualifiers.

The team is currently third in the group with five points in five matches.

The team faced the Atlas Lions of Morocco twice and got one draw, one defeat

Another away and return leg games were recorded with Malawi.

This far, the Comoro Island has won one of its AFCON qualifier matches.

The country has lost two and drawn two. The one last match for the team will be against the Indomitable lions of Cameroon.

If this East African nation wins, Comoros will join Madagascar and Burundi all new comers in the new format competition.

The Coelacanths face Group B rivals and defending champions, Cameroon during the last day of the AFCON qualifiers at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on Saturday 23 March 2019.
