Niger’s President, Issoufou Mahamadou and the Interior Minister, Mohammed Bazoum have visited victims of the explosion of an overturned fuel tanker lorry on the night of Sunday 5th May 2019.
The Head of State had consoling words for the injured and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
Reports talk of 58 deaths and 37 injured.
Hospital sources say the death toll is likely to rise because most of the injured suffered severe burns.
The fuel tanker explosion incident
Just before midnight on Sunday, 5th May 2019, a fuel tanker lorry overturned close to the airport in Niamey, capital of Niger.
Many ran to the accident site to collect fuel from the overturned lorry.
Shortly after, the tanker exploded resulting to many deaths and injured.
A similar case of explosion occurred in Cameroon on 14th February 2008 leaving over 200 persons dead.
In Nigeria, about 100 people reportedly died in a similar accident in Okogbe in July 2012.
