At the start of the match with the Benin, fans of the Indomitable Lions were upbeat assuming that their adversary was a relatively lighter weight in AFCON.
The Indomitable Lions hoped to grab the three points with relative ease and lead the group F after what many fans considered a disappointing performance with Ghana.
But the game against Benin that ended in a zero all score was more disappointing.
Yaounde in the heat of the Cameroon-Benin encounter
Enthusiastic crowds of supporters clustered in popular spots in Yaounde to watch the encounter in a festive environment.
Thirty minutes before the game started, fan sang songs of victory with the total assurance that the boys will put up a remarkable show.
At the sound of kick-off, the cheers from one of the drinking spots in Bastos Yaounde were deafening.
“le Benin dans la sauce”; and other victory songs were heard.
But as the Benin- Cameroon encounter unfolded, and the goals were not coming, frustration set in.
Questions on the Head Coach Clarence Seedorf’s strategy started coming up.
Many wondered why a “goal getter” like Christian Bassogog should be left on the bench till fifteen minutes to the end of the game.
At the sound of the final whistle, the zero all result of the game was more vexing even though Cameroon qualified for the next round.
Derek Bilog a fan, is one of the few who remained hopeful.
“It was a very very disappointing game today. We expected a fierce performance from the Lions with a lot of goals but they have instead put doubt on what their subsequent performances will look like if they can’t beat a weak team like Benin. We will keep on supporting the boys hoping they bring home the trophy.”
Despite the disappointment, many still imagine that Seedorf has a special strategy to guarantee victory for the defending champions.
