African Common Market: Headquarters in Accra, Ghana

The Permanent Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area is Accra, Ghana. The decision was taken during the 12th extraordinary summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union that held in Niamey, Niger on 8th July 2019.

Six countries initially postulated to host the permanent secretariat including Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar and Eswatini. The member countries at the summit unanimously agreed on the choice of Accra in Ghana to host the headquarters. The establishment was the headquarters is one of the decisions taken by the 54 signatories to move forward with the free Trade Area agreement which is expected to go fully operational by July 2020.

The President of the African Commission Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat described the African common market as the pride if the continent.

Delegates from Cameroon and the other African countries at the summit were agreed on the fact that Ghana has long advocated the values ​​of Pan-Africanism, good governance and democracy. They also indicate that since 1963, Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah, the former Ghanaian President, was already dreaming of an African Continental Free Trade Area.

Countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also strongly support the drive of a continental free trade area and have taken steps to interconnect their respective countries.
