Kondengui Central Prison riot: MINCOM revists the twist and turns

One day after violent riots at the Yaounde Central Prison Kondengui, the Minister of Communication comes back to the event.

In a press statement, government’s spokesman informs that the situation is under control.

Two inmates injured during the incident are currently receiving treatment while 177 others, identified as the ring leaders are being questioned by security officials.

The press statement from Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, confirmed what many speculated;

– that the turbulence was sparked by a group of individuals on preventive detention in connection with the crisis in the North West and South West regions.

He indicates that the innitial claim was to present their complain to competent authorities but the protest quickly degenerated to a violent demonstration.

Detainees held for other crimes joined in the violent protests and proceeded by attacking other compartments of the prison facility.

Security forces were call in while administrative authorities discussed urgent measures to restore calm.

The Minister of Communication notes that, but for the two inmates injured, no human life was lost.

Amongst the structures put on fire are;
– the prison library
– the woman’s sawing room
– the office of the officer in charge of discipline

Other cases of looting and molestation were also reported.

Mr Rene Emmanuel Sadi on behalf of government, condemns the incident and highlights the fact that government will continue to listen to all complains in total objectivity.
