2019 AfroBasket Women: The unfortunate journey of the basket lionesses

The Basketball Lionesses of Cameroon has had a minimal performance at the just ended 2019 AfroBasket in Dakar, Senegal.

 

Cameroon was battered at the playoffs on Wednesday 14th August 2019 at the Dakar Arena by Morocco with a score of 63 – 68.

The early exit for Cameroon was also marked with disgraceful defeat by the D’Tigress of Nigeria with a vast margin of 39 points for Cameroon and 106 for Nigeria

Cameroon and Group games

The Basketball Lionesses of Cameroon were paired in group B alongside Nigeria and Tunisia.

The central African team played two games : lost one and won the other , a situation that helped the team advanced to the playoffs but was stopped by Morocco

The Lionesses received the highest spanking on day-2 action against Nigeria after losing all the four quarters and recording just 39 points
In Group B, Nigeria sailed through to the quarterfinals after registering two wins in two outings, +116 points difference, and 4 out of 4 points.

Cameroon could only manage to reach the play-offs even with −25 points.

Tunisia came out at the tail with two outings and two defeats.

Nigeria wins for the 4th time

Nigeria is present champions of the AfroBasket Women after humbling host Senegal.

The Nigeria Women Basketball team, D’Tigress won their second consecutive and fourth overall title after beating Senegal in the final.

 

Nigeria welder the storm of host Senegal to win a back to back FIBA Afrobasket Women Championship by 60-55 points hereby winning her fourth (4th) title in the process.

In a tight game worthy of genuine final, Nigeria took the first quarter by 14-10, won the second quarter 18-14, as well as the third quarter 16-13 before losing her first quarter of the competition in the fourth quarter by 12-18.

About the tournament

The 2019 AfroBasket Women was held from 10th to 18th August 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.

The tournament was also the first step for the qualification for FIBA Africa for the women’s basketball tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

The top six teams have qualified for the African pre-qualifying tournament
