AFMEC: Challenges Women Face reporting elections discussed

The National symposium of Media Women and Election Reporting is scrutinising the difficulties women face when covering elections.

Some of the challenges highlighted during the symposium are related to cultural practices, violence and practices that prevent women from being efficient in the coverage of the electoral process.

According to Rekiatou Musa a journalist, “People have difficulties differentiating gender and sex. Women are not sent on the field during the elections because there is a belief that they are not capable enough to bear the pressure on the field”.

Media Women’s Responsibility

During the session women were reminded of the responsibility of imposing and proposing their merits in the society.

The media being the watch dog of the society has the responsibility of promoting equal participation of women during elections.
