The horizon 2020 framework research program of the European Union in Cameroon has been launched in Yaoundé.
The program that seeks to promote funding for research in Health, agriculture and ICT was opened by the Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation, Madeleine Tchouente. She invited Cameroonian researchers to demonstrate innovation and creativity to benefit from the program.
The Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program estimated at 650 million Fcfa is expected to harness immense opportunities in the fields of agriculture, health, education and ICT among others which are an integral part of the government’s economic development strategy.
Scientific Research and Innovation can change to position Cameroon of hubs in innovations in the Central African sub region. It was announced that the Union Africa and the European Union will support innovative researchers after the process of selecting candidates to finance their projects.
The Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation said Cameroon continues to face a number of challenges that hinder the efficient exploitation of Science, Technology and Innovation. “In spite of the highly appreciable quality of the results of their research, our institutes are slow to lean with the modernity” Dr. Madeleine Tchuenté added.
The organizers highlighted the importance of research as a tool for Economic and Social Development.
At the close of the opening ceremony, the delegation paid a working visit to the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation for a close door working session with the Minister.
Cameroonian researchers look forth with optimism to the acquisition of knowledge and funding from the European Union horizon 2020 in the fields of agriculture, health and information and communication technologies and contribute to achieving sustainable development in the country.
