2022 World Cup Qualifiers: Cameroon and Nigeria in the same pot

Pots for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup for the African continent have been made public by Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) ahead of this Tuesday, January 21, 2020 second round draw to take place in Cairo, Egypt.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and her neighbour, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are in Pot 1 alongside the reigning AFCON champions, Desert Foxes of Algeria and Teranga Lions of Senegal.

They other teams in Pot 1 are Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Mali and Congo Democratic Republic.

Pot 2 is made up of Burkina Faso, South Africa, Guinea, Uganda, Cape Verde, Gabon, Benin, Zambia, Congo, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Pot 3 has Madagascar, Mauritania, Libya, Mozambique, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Niger, Central African Republic, Namibia and Guinea-Bissau.

Pot 4 is host to Malawi, Angola, Togo, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Liberia and Djibouti.

The preliminary pairings have been determined by December, 2019 FIFA Rankings.

The Pots

• Pot 1 : Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali, Congo DR

• Pot 2 : Burkina Faso, South Africa, Guinea, Uganda, Cabo Verde, Gabon, Benin, Zambia, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire

• Pot 3 : Madagascar, Mauritania, Libya, Mozambique, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Niger, Central African Republic, Namibia, Guinea-Bissau

• Pot 4 : Malawi, Angola, Togo, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Liberia, Djibouti

The Schedule

• Second round : The group phase of the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar will kick off in March 2020 and ends October 2021.
• Third round : The ten group winners will be drawn into five two-legged knockout ties to be played in November 2021. The best will represent Africa in the Middle East come 2022.

The schedule has been done with a consideration on the new AFCON date from June back to January in Cameroon.
