Governors Conference : Ensuring Smooth February 9 Elections, Top Priority

The Governors of Cameroon’s ten regions are meeting in Yaounde for their first biannual conference in 2020.

Directives On February 9 Elections

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji has opened the two day meeting with a call on Governors to provide the necessary security for elections to hold in all 360 subdivisions of the country.

He said, “In my capacity as the Agent of the Government in the electoral process, it is incumbent on the Minister of Territorial Administration, through Administrative Authorities, to provide ELECAM with appropriate security measures during the anxiously awaited February 9 elections.

In fact, the Head of State’s Directives are very clear:  Elections must take place all over the national territory, that is, in all the 10 regions, 58 Divisions and 360 Sub-Divisions, and this should be in complete safety and serenity.
On December 31, 2019, the Head of State was formal on this, and I quote: “Security measures have been put in place for all citizens to be able to exercise their right to vote all over the territory. These measures shall be reinforced if need be.” “

Measures Taken

Prior to the holding of the security meeting, 700 personnel of the National Gendarmerie were deployed to the North West and South West regions to guarentee the safety of voters and ensure the security of the electoral process.

The 2020 First Biannual Conference of Regional Governors is also an occasion to evaluate the the security and socioeconomic situation in each of the regions.

The Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele and the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence in charge of the National Gendarmerie, Galax Etoga each presented Governments security strategy during a close door session.

Explaining Government Action

The Minister of Territorial Administration has instructed Regional Governors to fight fake news by carrying out regular contact tours within their administrative units, to explain the conclusions of cabinet meetings chaired by the Prime Minister.
