2021 FIBA AfroBasket: Cote D’Ivoire Grabs First Place In Group C After Three Straight Wins

The Basketball ‘Elephants’ of Cote D’Ivoire have recorded three straight wins to top Group C at the end of the third day of the 2021 FIBA qualifiers in Yaounde Cameroon.

The host, Cameroon ended the 3-day qualifiers at the second position with two victories and a defeat in the hands of Cote D’Ivoire.

Cote d’Ivoire closed the first-leg of Group C qualifiers undefeated in three games in Cameroon’s soil.

The last group Game pitting Cameroon and the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire proofed to be a big deal despite Cameroon’s inability to close up the 8-point gap.

Stephane Konate powered ruthless Cote d’Ivoire with a game-high 25 points as they upset hosts Cameroon 82-74 in the final day of the first-leg of Group of the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers.

The Ivorians led by as many as 17 points, never trailed, and even though Cameroon won the rebounding battle (49-44), Konate and Co stayed composed under Cameroon’s comeback attempts.

Joining Konate in the scoring sheet were Deon Thompson, Guy Edi and Vafessa Fofana who combined for 43 of Cote d’Ivoire points.

Many described the match as a repeat of the Ivorian triumph over Cameroon during the 2013 FIBA AfroBasket.

Twenty teams will participate in the second round of qualification for the FIBA AfroBasket 2021.These teams are divided into five groups of four. The teams will play two tournaments in the international windows.

The top three teams from each group will automatically qualify to the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 to be organised in Kigali, Rwanda.
