237vote: Constitutional Council annuls elections in North West and South West

The Constitutional Council has cancelled elections in some parts of the North West and South West regions.

The verdict was passed during the second and final day of hearings of post electoral litigations.

The decision was in favour of eleven petitions filed by the Social Democratic Front SDF party against the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM, Elections Cameroon, ELECAM and the Ministry of Territorial Administration, MINAT for the partial cancellations of elections in the two regions on for a number of reasons.

The SDF College of lawyers argued before the council that the security situation marred the electoral process.

The Constitutional Council has cancelled elections in 11 constituencies in some parts of the North West and South West regions.

The tense atmosphere as a result of the crisis resulted in law voter turnout in both parts of the two regions.

The SDF also accused ELECAM of violating the electoral code by grouping several polling stations into poling centres thereby making it difficult for voters to identify their polling stations.

All the arguments brought up in the submissions present by the other parties were not enough to convince the members of the Constitutional Council.

At the close of several hours of hearings that was two suspensions for deliberation amongst members of the council, the verdict was finally pronounced by the President of the Constitutional Council, Clement Atanaga.

The judgement annuls legislative elections in Momo West, Mezam centre (Bamenda I, II, III), Bali, Menchum South, Momo East, Mezam North in the North West region and Lebialem in the South West region.

At the close of the hearings, the Deputy Secretary General of the CPDM, Gregoire Owona expresses disappointment but accepted the verdict of the Constitutional Council which is the highest jurisdiction in the country.

SDF petitioner, Honourable Joseph Mbah Ndam expressed satisfaction with the decision of the council before urging authorities to seek lasting solutions to the socio political crisis prior to the rerun of the election.

According to the provisions of the Electoral Code, once an election is cancelled, ELECAM has between 20 and 40 days to organise a rerun of the said communities.
