The Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam has issued a release specifying the legal provisions for the election of Mayors and their deputies. All elected municipal councilors in their respective municipalities are expected to take part in session as of right that is after the proclamation of results.
In a circular signed on February 13, 2020, the Minister stipulates that the first session of the councilors elected on February 9, 2020 is convened by the representative of the State on the second Tuesday following the proclamation of the results of the election of municipal councilors.
The session as of right is devoted to the election of the Mayor and deputy Mayors. According to article 193 of the Electoral Code, the deadlines for convening sessions as of right varies depending on the dates of proclamation of the election results by the municipal supervision commissions.
Consequently, the session as of right will not hold on the same day nationwide. In municipalities where results were published between Sunday, 9th and Monday 10th February 2020, the session as of right will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 while in those that results were published from Tuesday, 11th to Wednesday 12th February 2020 the session takes place on February 25, 2020 according to the release.
Elections of city mayors and their deputies
Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam also fixed the date for the elections of Mayors of City Councils on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. The results of elections in the said municipalities were announced after February 10, 2020.
Directives to Senior Division Officers
The election of the executive of city and municipal councils will be conductors during full sessions attended by the Senior Division Officers of the Divisions (SDO) where the councils are found.
The Minister of Decentralization and Local Development instructed the SDOs to:
– Respect the various dates of convocation of the sessions as of right,
– Ensure with the executive, a perfect material and logistical organization of the elections of mayors and their deputies,
– Ensure the preservation of public order during the event.
At the end of the elections, a ministerial decree will proclaim the results and the newly elected officials will take the oath of office election before the judicial authority. This will be followed by their officially installation by the Senior Divisional Officer.
