Public health facilities in Cameroon are ready to offer the required medical care to infected persons or those suspected to have contracted the coronavirus.
The Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie, on 28th January 2020, outlined practical measures taken by government to prevent the importation of the virus into the country.
Recently, public health officials mobilized all the required resources, including an arsenal of medical personnel who are ready to bring in the appropriate response in case the virus is imported into Cameroon.
The Response mechanism
Screening machines have been installed at the Yaounde international airport to systematically screen passengers flying into Cameroon especially from China.
The Centre Pasteur in Cameroon is also ready to screen persons suspected of having contracted the virus.
Authorities confirm that they have acquired reagents to screen over a hundred suspected cases.
An Isolation Unit has also been set up at the Yaounde Central hospital where confirmed cases will be treated.
Dr. Eugene Sobgwi, a personnel of a that facility says two patients can be admitted simultaneously at the isolation ward.
He however says though no suspected case has been reported, authorities are working to increase the capacity of the structure .
Rumors have been circulating recently about a suspected case of the virus in Douala, but there has been no confirmation from Public Health authorities.
The Cameroonian who got infected
Kem Senou Pavel Daryl, the 21-year-old Cameroonian student who got infected in China has reportedly recovered.
The young student recounted the story of his survival to the BBC.
For now, the case of the Cameroonian student of Yangtze University is known to be the only Cameroonian to have been infected with the virus.
The lone confirmed case in Africa is that of a 33-year-old foreigner resident in Egypt.
Coronavirus: global infection statistics
The deadly Coronavirus virus , declared by the world Health Organization as a global public health emergency on January 30, is fast spreading to other countries.
According to CNN 73,000 people are now known to have been globally infected.
The number of deaths recorded has also soared to 1,873. Out of this figure, only five deaths have been reported out of China.
As the battle against the virus rages on, more countries are evacuating their citizens from China.
