Gardasil : The vaccine against Cervical cancer to be introduced soon

Gardasil is the new vaccine against cervical cancer to be introduced in the routine Immunization, from September, 2020.

The vaccine prevents the Human Papilloma Virus infection , HPV that is responsible for Cervical Cancer.

Officials of the Expanded Programme on Immunization are in in Ebolowa, for a two-day workshop to validate tools for the introduction of the new vaccine from February 6-7 2020.

Who is concerned ?

The vaccine will be administered free of charge to young girls aged 9, nationwide.

Prof. Robinson Mbu, Director of Family Health at the Ministry of Public Health explains that Gardasil is most effective in young girls who are not sexually active.

Accordingly, the vaccine has proven to be ineffective when administered to girls who are already sexually active .

Going by the schedule, the first dose will be administered in September 2020, and the second dose six months after.

Educating parents

Parents will have to be sensitized to permit their children receive the vaccine.

To facilitate the process, the officials have crafted some measures that will permit all parents to be sensitized on the innovation .

Special communication tools have been designed to educate parents and young girls on the importance of the vaccine.

Brochures carrying key messages will be produced in the two official languages to be distributed to parents , health and education personnel and other stakeholders nationwide.

Educative programs will also be produced in local languages to be aired on community radio stations and television channels in order to reach parents and young girls in enclaved areas.

Communication specialists will also be dispatched to other public places including schools, churches and markets to spread the message.

Who has succeeded with Gardasil?

Cameroon’s introduction of the vaccine comes on the heels of Zimbabwe and Senegal that have successfully gone through the process.

The vaccine has so far proven to be the most effective way of stemming cervical cancer .
