2020 CHAN: Cameroon suggests that CAF postpones tournament

The Local Organising Committee of the 2020 CHAN, COCAN, has solicited for the Confederation of African Football, CAF to postpone the tournament due to the Covid-19 (Coronavirus pandemic).

The decision comes after an extra-ordinary meeting of the members of the COCAN this Tuesday, March 17th, 2020.

In a communique signed by Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education, President of the COCAN, the meeting delved on the impact of the Coronavirus on the organisation of the 2020 CHAN by Cameroon.

After deliberations, the members cited some the worrying issues that have motivated their decision to call on CAF to postpone the football bonanza.

-The lockdown of activities in many countries will make it difficult to assemble players, delegations and supporters amongst many others.

-Closure of frontiers possess a problem of flights etc

– The issue of quarantine and isolation may hold down players, visiting delegates and CAF staffers.

-Ten of the sixteen participating countries have recorded cases of the covid-19 while other have closed borders already.

The aforementioned points amongst many others was reason enough for the President of COCAN and his close aides to fall on a final conclusion that the health of Cameroonians and the visiting delegations is of prime importance.

Despite the fact that huge projects have already been carried out, COCAN thinks the postponement is the best shot for the moment.

COCAN has also called on its members to stay on the alert while promising the best football tournament to Cameroonians when the time comes.

COCAN now awaits CAF’S response in the very near future
