Fighting COVID-19: Cameroonians Recieve 19 Relief Measures With Mixed Feelings

Cameroonians have received the 19 accompanying measures to cushion the effects of COVID-19 announced by the Prime Minister this 30th April 2020 with mixed feelings.

Immediately the announcement was made on the National Radio, some bar owners who were about closing tarried due to the measure lifting the ban on bars functioning after 6pm.

Some taxi drivers on their part, swung back to what used to obtain before: carrying three passengers behind instead of two.

It seemed like many were impatiently looking forward to the reopening of bars and other entertainment spots as by 7pm, music could be heard booming from some hot spots that had gone silent due to the previous measures.

A recent release from the Presidency suspended public celebrations of Labour Day and the National Day yet some Cameroonians are preparing to celebrate Labour Day following the lifting of the curfew on snackbars, restaurants and other entertainment spots.

Apparently, most Cameroonians are paying more attention to the first two accompanying measures.

Apart from those celebrating the new measures, some Cameroonians think the lifting of the ban on entertainment spots and public transport is too early, against the backdrop of new COVID-19 cases detected daily in the country.

Measures including Wearing of Masks and Social Distancing must Continue

In spite of the reopening of snackbars after 6pm and the resumption of normal transportation activities, the Government has stressed on the importance of wearing of masks and social distancing.

The question on many minds however is how effective will this be?

Will Cameroonians respect social distancing at these entertainment spots? How about social distancing in vehicles?

Will Cameroonians effectively put on masks at entertainment spots?

To many, such measures can work better in an environment where everyone is conscious of the common enemy…unfortunately, this is not the case in Cameroon, they retort.

Well, these questions and certainly others will be answered as the days unfold.
