Prime Minister And Head Of Government Chairs Inter Ministerial Cabinet Meeting With Focus on: Effective Follow-Up Of COVID-19 Patients; Practical Modalities For Back To School As COVID-19 Cases Spike Up

The traditional cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute on May 28, 2020 was devoted to assess the level of follow up of #COVID19 patients and the level of preparedness of schools and universities in the country come June 1, 2020.

The May 28, 2020, cabinet meeting did not appear like the traditional monthly meeting chaired by the Prime Minister and Head Of Government, as two main preoccupations were the focus of the meeting:

(1) the state of health of Cameroonians affected by #COVID19, and

(2) how prepared are schools in the resumption of classes in all levels of education for examination classes, higher education and universities.

Other Socio-Economic measures aimed at helping households and small and median size enterprises also came under review during the meeting.

Public Health Minister, Dr. Manaouda Malachie was the first of the six ministers to paint the picture of the state of follow up of #COVID19 patients in Cameroon.

As of May 28, 2020, Cameroon has recorded about 5326 cases of #COVID19, 3326 recovered cases and 177 dearths, and 47 patients on ventilators.

The Public Health Minister reiterated that measures have been taken to capacitate all other health structures at the district levels to help manage the pandemic.

According to the Minister the pandemic is well managed because only three regions are hard hit (Centre, Littoral and West Regions) while two Regions have zero cases (Adamawa and South Regions) and less ten cases in five regions of the (North West, South West, East, North, and the Far North Regions).

To the Ministers of Basic Education, Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, Professor Pauline Nalova Lyonga and Professor Jacques Fame Ndongo, all acknowledged the readiness of the schools and universities structures respectively, to receive the students.

From disinfecting the infrastructures, to the strict applications of barrier measures (provision of face masks to students with none, to hand washing, hand sanitizers, temperature control, and social distancing by all.

Other Ministers like the Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation, Madeleine Tchuente has assured the availability of local production of medicines and health equipment, face mask, and the manufacture of alcohol- based hand rubs are completed, and are in compliance with the Cameroon Standards and Quality Agency as well as the World Health Organization. Priority will be given to the education sector due to the resumption of classes.

LeJeune Mbella Mbella on his part, announced that a third contingent of over 1000 Cameroonians will soon be repatriated to Cameroon after proper identification. This comes after the first two repatriation contingents of about 1,725 persons to Cameroon were made.

Finance Minister, Luis Paul Motaze,announced that the application of relief measures also came under review, at the instructions of the Head Of State, Paul Biya. Some tax breaks were given to small businesses and households, and the last phase will be done in the nearest future.

To the Minister of Territorial Administrstion, Paul Atanga Nji, Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, instructed the frequent visit of off and on licences making sure that they comply with the decree of November 9, 1990 which lays down the conditions and proceedings for the operation of drinking spots. This, the Premier insist has to be respected, by opening at 6:00 am to 9:00 pm for off licences and from 6:00 am to midnight for on licences.

At the end of the 51/2 hours cabinet meeting , Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute instructed the ministers to speed up the work of setting up and equipping all the specialized health care units and Centres dedicated to treat #COVID19 patients so as to improve on the patient care. The list of authorized Public and private health facilities should be made public in other to help the people infected with #COVID19 get appropriate treatment.

The Prime Minister also, instructed the Education Ministers that all schools and universities should be provided with health kits required for the protection of pupils, students and teachers come June 1, 2020.
