COVID-19: Medics Make use of online platforms to provide services

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Cameroon, physicians say they have had to adapt to modern ways in order to reach out to patients.

In Yaoundé, major hospitals were selected to cater for patients suffering from the coronavirus.

The stigma and fright of the population from catching the virus because of hospital visits scared patients away.

Doctors have turned to online platforms to consult and give assistance to patients in areas where they can without any physical contact.

Doctor Ndifor of the Yaoundé Central Hospital says he advised his regular patients suffering from certain conditions to stay home and consult him through calls or emails.

“It is better for patients who already suffer from a health pathology to stay home than coming to the hospital and run the risks of contracting the COVID-19. If I can, l’ll talk with them online and make prescriptions for them.”

He adds that it is like working a nonstop shift.

He explains that he needs to create time for patients who consult him in hospital and those who seek help through online platforms.

Doctor Kamga on his part says those he has rendered services to are more of friends and family who are scare from hospitals these days because of the coronavirus.

Docter patient online consultations

In a more organised setting, organisations such as the Global Telehealth Network offer free online consultations to patients and African countries in need of health services.

Some medical doctors have also made recordings of health tips on different health pathologies and uploaded them on different social media networks where anyone can access for information.
