The 2020 Olympic Week will be observed worldwide in the context of the Coronavirus, and Cameroon like many other member countries will celebrate in low key.
In the build up to the D-day, scheduled forJune 23, 2020, the President of the Cameroon National Olympic and Sporting Committee, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum says no enlarged celebrations and sporting activities will be carried out this time around.
Hamad Kalkaba Malboum insists the days leading up to June 23 will be marked by sensitisation campaigns and promotion of Olympic values.
To him, respecting government measures in the fight against the killer Coronavirus has motivated the change in the way the celebrations have been carried out in the past years.
Accordingly, these low key activities will be carried out in Cameroon;
# Two sport icons in the country, Francoise Mbango and Raoger Milla will lead a sensitisation campaign on the fight against COVID19.
The campaign will zoom on barrier measures as one of the ways to combat the virus. Here, the audience will be young athletes in the country.
# The two celebrated sports icons will carry on with the donation of COVID19 kits amongst many other things.
# Athletes will be tested for coronavirus during this period.
# Athletes will also be educated on the importance of staying fit even in confinement. They will receive lectures on the dangers of the coronavirus pandemics amongst many issues.
# It will also be a platform to source funds to assist athletes living this difficult moments.
In this light, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum was received in audience by Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, during which both personalities discussed how the government can set in to assist Cameroonian athletes in times like these.
According to the President of the Cameroon National Olympic and Sporting Committee, athletes involved in individual sports who make money from competitions will be prioritised in the funding project.
The Olympic Week will also be a platform to drilled athletes programmed to take part in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The Olympic Week is dedicasted to celebrate the anniversary of the International Olympic Commitee, founded in 1894. Member countries use this speriod to organise sporting events, sensitisation campaigns all in a way to promote Olympic values.
Sporting disciplines exercised during the Olympic Games will dominate celebrations during the upcoming Olympic Week.
