After four years of construction work, the Yaoundé Sports complex is ready for use, and the President of the Republic came personally to celebrate this one more jewel of the excellent cooperation between Cameroon and the People’s Republic of China. At exactly 11 a.m., the Presidential motorcade drove into the grounds of the sports complex and he was received by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Mr. Augustin Edjoa as well as administrative authorities. After the National Anthem and military honours, the Head of State joined the Speaker of the National Assembly Cavaye Yeguie Gibril, the Prime Minister and Head of Government Ephraim Inoni, the Chinese Ambassador Huang Changqing and all the dignitaries and invitees who had already taken up positions in the grand stands erected for the occasion.

The ceremony proper started with the decoration of some meritorious Chinese and Cameroonians by the Prime Minister and Head of Government, followed by three presentations: a word of welcome from the Government Delegate to the Yaoundé City Council, in which he expressed gratitude to the Head of State, the Chinese Government and the Chinese Company which constructed the complex; a brief technical presentation of the edifice which is expected to have a life span of 200 years and constructed to resist earthquakes of up to 6 on the Richter scale; and the speech of the Chinese Ambassador where he lauded the commitment of the Chinese and Cameroonian Heads of State to work towards greater cooperation between the two countries.

The Head of State saluted this magnificent gift to the Youths of Cameroon and promised that more was in store as Cameroon and China intend to provide more infrastructure and opportunities for the development of sports in the country. President Biya said that as always, the government will always put the wellbeing of the youths at the centre of all its efforts. The Head of State then cut the ribbon and unveiled the commemorative plate before visiting some of the installations of the sports complex.
