Bar Council: Lawyers in Cameroon get back to work after a strike action

23/06/2009 The indefinite strike action triggered by a rebuff from the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Amadou Ali, last week has been called off.
The Cameroon Bar Council, in a communiqué published yesterday, made the announcement after meeting with the Prime Minister and Head of Government, Ephraim Inoni.

According to the President of the Cameroon Bar Council, Barrister Eta Besong Junior, a mixed commission to probe into the validity of the Lawyers’ petition has been created.

The press release calling off the strike specified that the decision takes effect from yesterday 22nd of June 2009.

Plaintiffs and Defendants greeted the news because activities in the law courts nationwide were greatly affected.

It is worth recalling that lawyers in Cameroon set out to observe a one week strike after the Douala Court of Appeal sentenced one member of the Bar Council, Lawyer Abessolo Etienne to fifteen years in prison.

The one week strike was to protest the bad treatment of lawyers in the country but the protest was pronounced indefinite when Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals allegedly dismissed the demands of the lawyers.

A breakthrough was reached yesterday after the Prime Minister promised to examine the demands of the Lawyers.
