22/10/2009 President Ali Bong, the newly sworn-in President of Gabon has chaired his first cabinet meeting. At the end of the meeting, important decision regarding allegations of mismanagement of funds at the Bank of Central African States, BEAC were taken.
The Governor of the Bank, Philibert Andzembe was dismissed while other Gabonese nationals who worked at the Paris Branch office of the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) have, reportedly, been arrested. The two suspects currently under Gabonese police custody, according to local reports are; Maurice Moutsinga, the bank’s former accountant at the Paris office and Armand Ndzamba, Director of Accounting in the Yaounde main office.
In the meantime, the BEAC Monetary Policy Committee meeting scheduled to take place in Yaounde on the 20th of October was postponed to a later date.
It is worth noting that the scandal within the Bank of Central African States broke out recently when a 19 billion CFA franc deficit was recorded on December 31, 2007, following the inconformity between the information in the records from the branch office and the bank statement provided by the Société Générale de Paris, holder of the bank’s branch account.
Before the outrage, Philibert Andzembe who took office as BEAC governor on 6th of July, 2007 following the sacking of his predecessor, Jean Felix Mamalepot was also accused of making illegal placements; these placements, resulted to huge deficits.
So far, the dismissal of BEAC’s Governor and arrest of suspects are measures taken by the government of Gabon, there are high expectations as to what decisions leaders of the Central Africa Monetary Zone shall take when they meet; some say the meeting shall hold in a very near future.
