Health: weeklong updates on AIDS, Abortion, Heart Diseases and Cancer

A solidarity match to sensitise the public on the importance of early diagnosis of cancer and its prevalence in Cameroon has held in Yaounde.

The match that started from the Central Post Office junction to the head office of National Cancer Control Programme at the Mballa II neighbourhood was also intended to raise government’s attention to the high cost of treatment for most patients and families.

The National AIDS week has been co-launched by the Ministers of Public Health and of Women’s Empowerment and the Family. The week, which was launched alongside the project “Universal Access to Female Condom”, will provide free anonymous screening for HIV/AIDS.

Highlights of the week long activities, includes an exhibition on HIV/AIDS organised by the Ministry of Finance. The exhibition, organised for three days, is intended to campaign for respect of the lives of persons living with HIV/AIDS.

The Cameroon Society of Cardiology has organised a screening campaign for cardiovascular diseases. The campaign targets primarily personnel of the Cameroon Radio Television Corporation.

The campaign which started last week shall continue at the Broadcasting House and the CRTV Audiovisual Training Centre at Ekounou.

Professor Robert Leke, a renowned gynaecologist has been assessing the magnitude of abortion and its implications in Cameroon.

According to his findings, close to 40% of maternal morbidity and mortality are caused by unsafe abortion. The study which was jointly sponsored by the Cameroon National Association for family Welfare (CAMNAFAW), and the International Planed Parenthood Federation, aims highlighting the prevalence rate of abortion and the high cost of its side effects.
