The news was made public this Saturday 14th October 2017 by the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Kenya was stripped-off the hosting rights after failing to meet CAF’s deadline in the construction of facilities vital for the competition; the most important being the stadia.

Despite the numerous chances the country was given to catch up, Kenya expressed a very lukewarm attitude and no apparent political will to host the competition.

It was on this backdrop that CAF’s Emergency Committee chaired by President, Ahmad Ahmad, met in Lagos, Nigeria, and unanimously decided to grant the Royal Moroccan Football Federation the right to host the fifth edition of CHAN.

The cities of Casablanca, Agadir, Marakech and Tangier have been selected to host the biannual tournament.

The emmergency committee preferred Morocco to Equatorial Guinea, another country that stood a good chance of replacing Kenya.

The Ethiopian Football Federation which also applied to host the tournament did not provide the government’s letter of guarantee, which is a mandatory document required by CAF.

The 2018 CHAN begins 12th January through 4th February.

The competition brings together sixteen teams made up exclusively of homebased players.
