Ex-soccer star, George Weah to be sworn as Liberia’s President

The first African footballer to be named FIFA World Best Player, George Manneh Weah will be sworn in this Monday 22nd January 2018 as the Liberia President. The ceremony will take place in the country’s political capital Monrovia. It will be attended by a number of Head of States and Government as well as other dignitaries especially those of the football family.

The 51-year-old secured a landslide victory to the presidency after an election run-off last December with 61.5% of votes. He takes over from Africa’s first female President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

He will be taking the top job at a time attempt in the Presidential race. His immediate challenge will be to pick cabinet members who will help him implement his campaign promises.

In a tweet to his more than 60,000 followers on Sunday night, the president-elect said: “In the future months, together, we will need to work harder than ever for Liberia to grow stronger”.

‘’King George’’ as he is often called grew up in Clara Town slum in Monrovia and went on to become the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year, starring for Tonerre FC of Yaounde, AC Milan, Paris St Germain and Chelsea.
