Football: Samuel Eto’o Fils switches gear in Turkey
Cameroonian international football superstar Samuel Eto’o has moved to Konyaspor, another Turkish club for a two-and-a-half year contract on an undisclosed fee.
The Barcelona and Inter Milan legend, 36, spent the past two-and-a-half seasons at Antalyaspor in Turkey.
The Chelsea striker, Eto’o has six goals in 15 matches this season, a downturn after scoring 44 goals in 76 games in the last two years in Antalyaspor.
Even before his official presentation scheduled to take place later this Wednesday 31st January 2018 at the Konya Buyuksehir Stadium,reports on the Konyaspor website Eto’o had “difficulty reaching his car” with fans cheering the striker “for a long time”.
The all smiley Eto’o dressed in peaked hat with a huge Chanel brooch was overwhelmingly surrounded by fans as he got off a private jet at Konya Airport.
The Anatolian Eagles have enjoyed the best period in their history in the last four seasons three of them during Eto’o’s sojourn in the team.
Antalysapor finished 9th in the Super Lig last season with 16 points from 19 games, after finishing third the year before, and won the Turkish Cup.
“We thank him for his contributions to the club so far and we wish him success in the next sporting event,” a statement from Antalayspor read.
Just to recall that Eto’o won three Spanish titles with Barcelona and the Champions League twice before going on to win the treble under Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan.
The four-time African player of the year then moved to Anzhi Makhachkala before a single season at Chelsea.
He spent a brief time at Everton and Sampdoria before the move to Antalyaspor.
As a member of the Cameroon national team, Eto’o was a part of the squad that won the 2000 Olympic tournament.
He has also participated in four World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations (being champion twice) and is the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, with 18 goals.
Samuel Eto’o Fils announced his retirement from international football on 27th August 2014 and in 2015, he received the Golden Foot Award.
