Ministry of Social Affairs: Government launches Campaign against social ills in the School Milieu
The Minister of Social Affairs,Pauline Irene Nguene and that of Secondary Education, Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe have jointly launched a sensitization campaign against social ills in the school milieu.
The event held in Yaoundé on 17th January, at the Lycee General Leclerc.
Drug consumption, violence,tobacco and alcohol consumption,the phenomenon of street children, pedophilia, cyber criminality and human trafficking are some of the current vices the government
is combatting.
A study carried out by the Global Youth Tobacco Survey ( GYTS) in Cameroon in 2008 reveals that ;
# 15% of students between 13-15 years smoke regularly
# 31% are potential smokers with 9% being girls and 31% boys
# 44% of young students have attempted consuming hard substance at least once
# 6.4 have received free cigarettes from companies
Stakeholders dished out educative talks to 270 students from some selected institutions in Yaoundé on the topics;
# The dangers of consuming drugs in the school milieu
# The advantages of Information Communication Technologies especially in the school milieu
# The law, drug abuse and Cyber Criminality
The students were freely screened of HIV/AIDS by personnel from the ministry of Health.
The campaign is in response to some Prime Ministerial directives following an inter-Ministerial meeting on, the 18th November 2016 on sensitizing youths against growing social ills.
A sensitization caravan will meet with students in schools across the national territory during this academic year.
