2018 Mount Cameroon Race of Hope: Buea booms as athletes complete medical screening

Some five hundred athletes for the 2018 Mount Cameroon Race of Hope are on the second and last day of medical examination to test their fitness for the competition.

The South West Regional Delegation of Public Health was like a bee hive as the competitors are clustered, anxiously waiting to get called-up.

The medical officers meticulously attend to each athlete and officials involved in the race.

The medical examination which is a determinant aspect for participation in the race, is executed in three phases.

Upon arrival, the participant is first and foremost shown the notice board to confirm their personal information: the name, place of birth, region of origin/country and category amongst other information registered during the application.

The contestant is later attributed a number to enable them undergo the medical check following the order of arrival.

The athlete then moves to the second phase which consists of checking of the vital signs to determine the functioning of the internal organs.

Mrs Agbor Evon who is part of the team explains that the vital signs consist of information relating to;
– Height
-Weight
-Pulse
-Blood Presure
-Temperature

This information is required to determine the physical fitness and the functioning of the cardiac system.

The last phase of the medical process is considered the doctor’s room. It is within the confines of the room that the cardiac and respiratory auscultation of the athlete are examined. This appears to be the most crucial.

Dr. Alunge Chancelline who is part of the team says those atheletes that produce complicated diagnosis are either referred to a specialist or denied the visa to participate in the marathon.

The medical screening is associated with the medical history to make a better assessement of the eligibility of the athlete.

Laboratory tests are carried out to determine cases of predisposition to heart disease and malfunctioning of the lungs.

These elaborous process, according to competent authorities, is required to avoid cases of sudden death and other complications.

At the corridors of the examination hall are anxious athletes who, though physically strong, are still afraid of the unknown.

They all are earger to take part in the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope that promises to be big, with stunning prizes.

Amongst the many atheles with high expectation is seven-time winner of the race, Taku Divine from Batibo, North West Region.

He says he is in Buea for nothing less than a victory in his category, the senior level.

Another participant is Mbah Paul who is vying for the first position in the junior category.

Mbah Paul who just rounded up his tests was very happy to note that his medicals raised no concern.

Just a day from D-Day, it is heating up in Buea. City dwellers happily welcome thousands into the town for another edition of the crowd-pulling event.
