East Region: Persistent power outages cause strike in Bertoua

Persistent and Regular power cuts in the East Region of Cameroon has led to a spontaneous strike action in the town of Bertoua.

The people of Bertoua complain they took to the streets following three weeks without electricity supply in their homes, couple with the persistent electricity cuts.
They say the last power cut is what has made them even more furious.
They complain that for the past three weeks they have been in complete blackout.
Some people running businesses depending on electricity say they have shut down their businesses following the unreliable power supply.
As early as 6:00AM this Wednesday 18th July 2018, the population had mounted barricades and blocked circulation of cars on major highways.
Traffic was halted causing vehicles transporting passengers and goods to the Northern regions, Chad and the Central Africa Republic to be grounded for hours.
The striking population held up posters with messages directed to hierarchy.
Some read “We deserve better” and “We need Electricity”
The disgruntled population complained of failed promises made to them by Electricity Supply Company ENEO in the past.
“We are tired of living in the dark, for the past three weeks, we have had no power.”
The disgruntled population wondered why energy supply is unstable in the town of Bertoua when the Lom Panga hydroelectric power plant is in the East Region.
The Mayor and Divisional Officer of Bertoua I quickly rushed to the scene to calm the population.
The administrative authorities promised the population measures are being put in place to restore electricity to their homes and businesses.
The appeased population chanted the national anthem as a show  of patriotism after listening to the administrative officials
