Decentralisation: Local councils receive guidelines on road maintenance

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Célestine Ketcha Courtès, has detailed guidelines for road maintenance by local councils in Cameroon.

This was the focus of a meeting organised at the Yaounde Conference Centre on 4th March 2019.

The Minister stated that the Council are expected to work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban development for efficiency and also to avoid

“the anarchic occupation of land.”

She stated that the Ministry is determined to work with these councils and develop cities that should also be appealing to investors.

MINHUD: 2019 earmarked Projects

From the public investment budget of the Ministry of Housing and the Road Fund, some 20 Councils in different regions have already receive close to 3.3 billion CFA francs for the maintenance of earth roads.

Other projects to be carried out in 2019 include public lighting, the layout of intersections and urban squares.

In carrying out the projects, Councils are expected to abide by the plan drawn up by the Ministry.

At the end of the meeting, Mayors saluted government’s resolve to hand over power to councils for the effective implementation of development projects.
