The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have opened their 2019 AFCON run with a 2-0 win over the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau.
The five time title holders of the biggest continental football tournament crippled little known Guinea Bissau team , Tuesday 25th June 2019 at the Ismailia stadium in Egypt.
Yaya Banana opened the score board at the 69th minutes by heading low into the net from Karl Toko Ekambi’s cross.
Striker Stephane Bahoken capitalised on a defensive mix-up three minutes later to seal 2-0 deal for his team.
Cameroon started slowly in Ismailia but grew into the game after failing to immortalise several scoring opportunities before the interval.
International forward, Christian Bassogog twice failed to hit the target from good positions, while Fulham midfielder and AFCOn debutant, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa misssed severally too.
Full-back Joyskim Dawa Tchakonte and captain Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting both forced fine saves out of Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Jonas Mendes, before quick-fire goals from Banana and Bahoken secured the win.
From the contesting camp, Piqueti went closest for Guinea-Bissau, heading against the post from Nadjack’s delivery.
Cameroon are next in action against fellow tournament favourites the Black Stars of Ghana on Saturday 29th June 2019 while Guinea-Bissau takes on the Squirrels of Benin later that day.
As at now, Cameroon leads the standings in group F with three points and plus two goals.
The Squirrels of Benin and the Black Stars of Ghana are second on the table after playing an all one tie game (2-2).
The two time AFCON participant, the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau are at tail with no point.
