National Day of Mourning : Cameroon honours seventeen fallen heroes

It was 7:30 am when different detachments of the military matched to the rhythm of the brass band to the esplanade of the General Headquarters Brigade.

#Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defence in charge Veterans and Victims of War, Kouma Issa were amongst the many top officials, relatives of the fallen soldiers and population present.

The ceremony was organised in two phases; first the military honours and second the prayer sessions.

It all started in strict military tradition with the hoisting of the flag at half mast indicating that the entire nation honours the fallen heros.

Then came the inter-religious prayer sessions.

Men of God from different religious backgrounds took turns to pray for the nation.

Muslim cleric Chick Oumarou Mallam prayed for the repose of the souls of the fallen soldiers.

Orthodox priest, Father Elefteris Hemoga prayed for the bereaved families urging them to look up to God.

Pastor Paul Mbende prayed for dialogue, reconciliation and forgiveness as cardinal pillars of sustainable peace.

Reverend Alain Ruben Gwet assured the military that the Evangilical church is always praying for them. He reminded youths to be patriotic.

The metropolitan Archbishop of Yaounde, Mgr Jean Mbarga
prayed for peace in Cameroon.

In Yaounde, the ceremony marking the National Day of Mourning was presided over the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo.

Similar events were organised in all regional capitals.
