SONARA Fire Incident: Government opens investigations

Following that fire incident that occurred on Friday, 31st May 2019, at 9:55 pm, government issues a press statement stating that it was an explosion at the fuel fractionation zone of the National Refining Company (SONARA) that caused the fire.

The accident affected some equipment of atmospheric distillation units. Government officials of the Ministry of Water resources and Energy were on scene in the early hours of Saturday, 1st June 2019.

According to preliminary findings, the incident was purely technical.

However, competent authorities are currently investigating to determine the exact cause of the accident.

In the meantime the SONARA management are working to gave a restart of activities that were temporarily halted.

Despite the yet to be determined material damage , no life was lost.

Government reassures the population that there will be continuous supply of petroleum products nationwide.

President Paul Biya has also given firm instructions that the unfortunate incident does not have a negative impact on the lives of the populations and on the project to extension and modernization SONARA.
