Refugee management:   13 billion CFA francs to empower councils

The project socioeconomic development of councils exposed to factors of instability has been launched. The Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam launched the project in Yaoundé this Tuesday, 9th July 2019.

Fifteen councils in five regions that host refugees and internally displaced persons are expected to benefit from the project that is sponsored by the European Union to the tune of 31.1 billion CFA francs.  The beneficiary regions include, Adamaoua, East, North, Far North and South.

The fund that will be used for the management of refugees and internally displaced persons is a tool for cooperation and development within the affected regions.

The Director General of the Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance, (FEICOM) Philippe Camille Akoa said the program will strengthen the resilience of municipalities in the face of the influx of refugees. He indicated that the target councils host at least 10 thousand and a maximum of 50 thousand inhabitants.

The immediate benefits of the project to councils include:

– Infrastructural development

– Creation of jobs and opportunities for local entrepreneurship,

– Vocational and technical training of refugees, internally displaced persons and other migrants.

In his launching speech, the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam, said that the immediate fallouts of that project is the construction of a block of three classrooms equipped with benches and tables in each of the 15 councils.

The project is which was initiated by FEICOM with the support of the German Technical Cooperation, Kfw and the National Indicative Program of the 11th European Development Fund for Cameroon will end in 2024.
